Healthy and Safe Ways to Celebrate July 4th

In 2020, most Independence Day activities were canceled due to the risk of spreading COVID-19 in crowds of people. This year, with more than 42% of Americans fully vaccinated, celebrations will occur, but they’ll be different from years past.[1] Use these tips from Brevard Health Alliance on how to stay safe during the 4th of July festivities.

Watch a Movie

If the fireworks and parades are too crowded or still canceled this year, queue up one of the 4th of July movies for families. This is also a great option if the weather is rainy on July 4th. Some classic patriotic movies include “Remember the Titans” and “Hamilton.” For households with teens, try “Independence Day” or “A League of Their Own.”[2]

Try Some Safe Fireworks

If fireworks are legal in your neighborhood, consider trying some fireworks safe for backyards. Never hold a lit firework in your hand or aim one at another person. Don’t let children handle fireworks.[3] Some safe options for backyards include sparklers with bamboo sticks or bang snaps, which are thrown onto concrete and make a small “bang!” sound.

Have a Cookout

Have a socially distant cookout with your friends, neighbors, or family on July 4th. Practice food safety guidelines, including cooking meats to the right internal temperature. For example, chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.[4]
