Between enrolling your child in school, signing them up for social activities, and managing your work obligations, it’s easy to overlook things once in a while. But, one thing parents never want to overlook is their child’s health. At Brevard Health Alliance, we’re proud to partner with families in Palm Bay, Melbourne, and Rockledge, FL, offering them the gold standard in pediatric care. Pediatrics is a medical specialty focusing on the health and well-being of infants, children, and adolescents. This field encompasses a wide range of physical, emotional, and social issues that can affect young patients from birth through age 19.
Pediatricians play a crucial role in children’s health by offering a variety of services. They conduct regular check-ups to monitor growth and development and ensure children are meeting important milestones. In addition, pediatricians diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses, provide guidance on nutrition and fitness, and address mental health concerns. Here are some other responsibilities of a pediatrician:
- Vaccine Administration—Immunizations are vital for young children. Our team will ensure your child stays on track with the recommended vaccines.
- Health Advice—If you have questions about your child’s health and well-being, don’t hesitate to ask. Your pediatrician will be happy to educate you on health issues affecting children.
- Coordination of Care—Pediatricians can collaborate with other healthcare professionals to create a comprehensive care plan tailored to your child’s needs.
Even the healthiest children are bound to get sick once in a while. Thankfully, pediatricians are equipped to treat a variety of common childhood illnesses. Some of the most prevalent include:
- Cold and Flu—These viral infections are common among children and can present with symptoms like a runny nose, cough, and fever.
- Ear Infections—Ear infections are no joke—they often lead to intense pain and fever.
- Stomach Bugs—Sometimes, tummy aches are more than just the result of eating too much candy. Gastroenteritis is common in children and often leads to diarrhea and vomiting.
- Allergies and Asthma—Does your child show any signs of respiratory problems? Pediatricians can diagnose and help manage allergic reactions and asthma.
You probably know to see a pediatrician regularly, but just how often should you make an appointment? Every child is different, but here is a general guideline:
- Newborns—See a pediatrician once or twice within the first week of birth, then at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months
- Toddlers (1-3 years)—At 15, 18, 24, and 30 months, then annually
- Children and Adolescents (3-18 years)—Annually
Here are some recommendations for preventative care scheduling.
Vaccinations protect your child from many serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. They work by stimulating the immune system to recognize and combat pathogens. Vaccines have been proven safe and effective, significantly reducing the prevalence of many infectious diseases. At Brevard Health Alliance, we highly encourage you to talk to your pediatrician about immunizations for children.
Knowing which vaccinations children need at each age can quickly become complicated. Fortunately, doctors for kids can keep you on track. Our pediatricians adhere to the high standards set by the CDC, following their expert guidance to ensure the best care for your child. Learn more about these trusted recommendations here.
Here is a sample vaccination schedule, but always talk to your provider about the best course of action for your child:
- At Birth—Hepatitis B (HepB)
- 2 Months—DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis), Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), IPV (Polio), PCV13 (Pneumococcal conjugate), and RV (Rotavirus)
- 4 Month—DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV13, and RV
- 6 Months—DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV13, RV, and HepB

We encourage you to choose a pediatrician before your due date. This ensures your newborn receives immediate and continuous care right from birth. During prenatal visits, you can meet the pediatrician, ask questions, and get comfortable with their approach to your child’s health care. Other benefits of getting a pediatrician early include:
- Parental Guidance—Parents can receive valuable advice and support regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care from the pediatrician. We hope this alleviates your concerns and helps prepare you for parenthood.
- Prevention and Education—A pediatrician can educate parents about important health topics, including vaccinations, nutrition, and developmental milestones.
- Early Detection—Having a pediatrician in place allows for early identification of any potential health issues, often leading to better outcomes for the child.
Supporting healthy habits in children goes a long way to establishing long-term wellness. Encourage a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Promote regular physical activity through play and sports, and ensure your child gets adequate sleep. Limiting screen time and promoting interactive and educational alternatives can also lead to healthier lifestyles.
Behavioral issues can manifest in various ways, including frequent tantrums, difficulties with authority, or withdrawal from social situations. If you notice any of these problems in your child, Brevard Health Alliance is here to help. Many of our providers specialize in behavioral health and can help you navigate these complex problems. We can evaluate the situation, determine if there are underlying issues, and recommend appropriate interventions. Prioritizing treatment early may significantly improve outcomes and help your child develop healthy coping strategies and social skills.
At Brevard Health Alliance, we strive to make our pediatric health services easily accessible. To schedule an appointment, simply call or text us at 321.241.6800. We’ll need your contact details, insurance information, reason for the appointment, and preferred times. From there, we’ll approve your request and prepare to meet you on your requested date.
Children are often nervous about visiting the doctor. But don’t worry—there are plenty of ways you can prepare your child for their appointment. First, try explaining what to expect in simple terms. From there, you might role-play the visit, read books about going to the doctor, or watch videos showing that the doctor’s office isn’t so scary. If they’re still anxious, consider bringing a favorite toy or blanket for after the visit.
Sometimes, families need pediatric care right away. If your child is ill or injured and can’t wait for an appointment, use our walk-in care services. Our pediatricians are available at extended weekday and weekend hours when emergencies arise. Visit our pediatric walk-in care clinic for these issues:
