The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the entire world, throwing lives into chaos. Not only did it affect work and social relationships, but it also affected everybody’s emotional and mental health. Now that there are vaccines available, you’re more than ready to ditch the mask. However, at Brevard Health Alliance, we have a few reasons why you should continue wearing a mask after getting a vaccine.

Why You Should Continue Wearing a Mask After Getting Vaccine

There are two reasons why vaccinated people still need to wear a mask. One reason is that it takes a little while for the body to produce antibodies, and during this time, there’s a chance of transmission of the virus even in asymptomatic individuals.[1]

The COVID-19 virus typically enters the body through our nasal passages. As this is the case, scientists aren’t sure if the human body produces enough antibodies in the nose to prevent the COVID-19 virus from thriving there.

However, you will still need to wear a mask after the vaccine as you’ll still carry enough of the COVID-19 virus to infect others. You don’t even have to sneeze or cough on someone to transmit the virus to them; all you have to do is breathe close to them. This means that, even if you aren’t infected by the virus, you can still infect someone else, and they can pass it onto more people even if they are asymptomatic.

How Long After Vaccine Can I Stop Wearing Mask?

One of the questions we frequently hear is “Can we stop wearing a mask after getting a COVID-19 vaccine?” Often people are disappointed and frustrated to learn that they still need to follow COVID-19 protocols. This means wearing a mask over their nose and mouth, washing their hands, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, and staying 6 feet away from other people. [2]
